  46. 1. How do I run this CD-ROM?
  47.  
  48.    A. You must have the CD-ROM in your drive in order to use it. The activities run 
  49.       from the CD; they will not be installed on your computer.
  50.  
  51.    B. Once you start the CD, you will see several screens checking for Java Script 
  52.       and Flash Player 5 on your computer. If you do not have Java Script or Flash
  53.       Player 5, follow the instructions on the screen to get it.
  54.  
  55.    C. Once you see the main menu screen with 8 activity icons, you can start the 
  56.       activities. Click on any icon to start that activity.
  57.  
  58.    D. If you exit the software, you will need to reinsert the CD in your drive in 
  59.       order to use it again.

  61.    E. If you insert the CD in your drive and nothing happens, (a) check the system 
  62.       requirements on the CD to make sure you can run it on your computer; (b) see

  70. 2. How do I start the activities?
  71.  
  72.    A. Click on one of the 8 activity icons on the main menu.
  73.    
  74.    B. You will see the description of the activity with 3 buttons underneath, one for 
  75.       each set of the  activity. Click on one of the buttons to start that set of the activity.
  76.    
  77.    C. The activity window will open.  Since each activity has its own rules, click on 
  78.       [Instructions] first to find out how to start the activity.

  84. 3. How do I learn with the activities?
  85.  
  86.   The activities on this CD-ROM are a fun way to learn and practice vocabulary. Once 
  87.   you select a activity from the activity menu, you will see a description of this activity. 
  88.   You will also see the area the activity helps you practice: synonyms, phrasal verbs, 
  89.   idioms, and so on. 
  90.  
  91.   The activities will either require you to find the correct word that completes a sentence
  92.   or to guess what a word in a certain category is. You will receive feedback after 
  93.   you answer a question. If you select an incorrect answer choice, the correct answer 
  94.   will be displayed before you can move on to the next question. Sometimes you will 
  95.   have to continue until you find the correct answer. Almost all of the activities will 
  96.   also display a final score and show you the number of questions you have answered 
  97.   correctly.

  99.   Some of the activities - OctoÆs Adventure, Bomb Squad, and Reverse Dictionary - have a Hint
  100.   button. Click on this button to learn what the words practiced in the activity mean and 
  101.   to see how they are used in a sentence

  108. 4. I canÆt start the activities.
  109.  
  110.   Make sure that you have the Macromedia Flash 5 Player. You need this free program 
  111.   to start most of our activities. To install Flash 5 Player on your computer:
  112.  
  113.    A. On your desktop, double-click [My Computer].
  114.  
  115.    B. Double-click your CD-ROM drive letter.
  116.  
  117.    C. Find a folder [Shockwave] and double-click it.
  118.  
  119.    D. Find an icon [Shockwave_Installer_Full.exe] and double-click it.
  120.  
  121.    E. This will run the Flash installation program.
  122.  
  123.    F. Once the Flash player is installed, reinsert the CD in your player.
  124.  
  125.    G. Run the CD again.

  134. 5. I have a Flash Player but I still canÆt start some of the activities.

  136.    Make sure that you have the Macromedia Flash Player 5. If you have an older 
  137.    version of the Flash player, some activities may not start properly. To install Flash 5
  138.    Player on your computer:

  140.     A. On your desktop, double-click [My Computer].
  141.  
  142.     B. Double-click your CD-ROM drive letter.
  143.  
  144.     C. Find a folder [Shockwave] and double-click it.

  165.    You need JavaScript to start these activities. Check your browser version and select one of 
  166.    the following:

  168.    A. Your browser version is Internet Explorer 5.0 or higher. 
  169.       JavaScript may not be enabled on your computer. To enable JavaScript:
  170.  
  171.       A. Go to the top menu bar in Internet Explorer and click Tools. 
  172.  
  173.       B. In Tools, click Internet Options. You will see a dialogue box. 
  174.  
  175.       C. Choose the Security tab (the second tab in the top left corner). 
  176.  
  177.       D. Find a button that says Custom Level. Click on it. You will see security settings. 
  178.  
  179.       E. Scroll down until you see Scripting. Under Scripting, you should see three 
  180.          categories:

  182.          [Active Scripting]
  183.          [Allow paste operations via script]
  184.          [Scripting of Java applets]

  186.       F. Click the white circle next to "Enable" under the [Active Scripting]. You should 
  187.          see a black dot appearing in the circle.

  191.       H. A pop-up window will appear asking you if you are sure you want to change the 
  192.          security settings in this zone. Click [Yes].

  247. 7. Nothing starts when I try to run the CD. I use a Mac.

  251.    B. Find a file [StartCD.exe] and double-click it. This will start the CD-ROM.

  257. 8. I canÆt hear the sound when I start some of the activities.

  259.    A. Check that your speakers are turned on and are plugged into the computer.
  260.  
  261.    B. Check that the volume in Windows is turned up and not muted. This can be done 
  262.       by clicking on the small yellow speaker icon in the bottom right corner of 
  263.       your screen. A volume slide bar will appear when you click on the icon.  
  264.       Move the slide bar up near the top. Make sure that the box next to æMuteÆ is 
  265.       blank.  
  266.  
  267.  NOTE: Some versions of Windows do not have the yellow speaker icon.
  268.  
  269.    C. Make sure that no other program is playing sound while you are playing the 
  270.       activities. Usually only one program can play sound at a time. If your computer is 
  271.       playing music or sound from another program, the activities may not have any sound.
  272.  
  273.    D. Check that your soundcard is connected correctly. One way to check this is to 
  274.       run another program or game that plays sound. If you can hear the sound in 
  275.       another program, then your soundcard is probably connected correctly. If 
  276.       other programs or games do not play sound when they are supposed to, there 
  277.       may be a problem with the way your soundcard is connected. Contact the 
  278.       support team for your soundcard. They may be able to help you with any 
  279.       connection problems.

  286. 9. What do I do if the CD-ROM does not start automatically after I insert it in the 
  287.    CD-ROM drive?

  289.    A. On your desktop, double-click "My Computer".

  293.    C. Find a file "StartCD.exe" and double-click it. This will start the CD-ROM.

  304.        and follow the instructions to download Netscape Navigator 4.7.

  306.     C. Restart the CD-ROM once you have downloaded Netscape Navigator.

  308.     D. Make sure that you use Netscape Navigator and not Internet Explorer every time 
  309.        you start the CD-ROM. If Netscape Navigator is not your default browser, you will 
  310.        need to open it from the Start menu before starting the CD-ROM.
